Cupping takes a lot of experience and skill, or so they say. An endowment of extra papillae on the tongue (i.e. super-taster powers) is a plus. That's the common assumption, when actually, what you really need is good luck.

First, there's actually very few jobs in the coffee trade dedicated to cuppers. Good luck finding a cupping job. Second,

on any given day, any tiny variable of roast, environmental change, or even your mood can completely change your tasting perceptions. Good luck controlling all that! As a final measure, a little bit of good luck goes a long way. Strangely, accepting the grace of good luck seems like the most practical thing to do.

This spoon will help—though it also works even if you don't believe in luck. Sweet Maria's Buena Suerte Cupping Spoon is made of 304 Stainless Steel, and is laser-etched with the words "Buena Suerte" (or "good luck," in Spanish) on its head, along with our logo at the bottom of the handle.

It features a deep round bowl, moderate size overall and that special curvature of the handle that permits skimming the coffee from the top of the cup. Each spoon weighs 45 g, measures 16 cm long (6.3 in), has a 45 mm bowl that will hold 5.5 ml of liquid. Great for slurping through tables upon tables of coffee samples.
